Anu Aga, Director
Ms. Anu Aga is on the Board of Thermax Limited, the leading Indian player in energy and environment management. She retired as Chairperson of the company in October, 2004.
She has done her BA in Economics and holds a post graduate degree in medical and psychiatric social work from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). She was selected for the Fullbright Scholarship for social workers to study in the U.S.
Mrs. Aga has been very active in various national and local associations like Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) and had served as the Chairperson of CII's Western Region. She has written extensively and given talks on the subjects of corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, role of women and education.
Mrs. Aga is the Chairperson of the Thermax Social Initiative Foundation (TSIF) which runs the CSR activities of Thermax. Along with Akanksha, TSIF has signed a MOU to support three municipal schools in Pune. She is also closely associated with the Teach for India Initiative which attempts bridging the inequity gap in education. She is keenly involved in the causes of communal harmony and human rights, especially women and children.
Dr. R A Mashelkar, Director
Dr. R A Mashelkar, former Director-General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has been inducted onto the Thermax Board as an independent Director, effective January 29, 2008.
Dr. Mashelkar, with his global exposure to science and technology, will help spearhead innovation within the company.
As one of India's foremost scientists, decorated by 26 universities around the world with honorary doctorates, Dr. Mashelkar is known for shaping India's science and technology policies in post-liberalised India, and for transforming CSIR into a user-focused, performance driven organization and in creating a balanced intellectual property regime in India. His crusade for protecting India's traditional knowledge has brought a new awareness around the world about the rights of the developing world.
Dr. Valentin von Massow, Director
Dr. von Massow is an Independent Director on the Board and also chairs the Strategic Business Development Committee.
Dr. von Massow received his PhD in Agricultural Economics from Georgia Augusta University, Göttingen (Germany) in 1983. After initial work experience in Africa, he worked for almost 20 years as a Management Consultant with The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in Europe, US and India; in 1993 he was promoted to be Vice President and Director of BCG Inc. During his tenure with BCG he held a number of senior positions, including that of Managing Director for BCG, India. He brings with him a rich global experience of business models, governance, strategy and operations.
Since 2006, Dr. Massow has been working as an Independent Non-Executive Director, based in London. His board mandates include companies and organisations in the (renewable) energy, environment and agriculture sectors in India, Germany and UK. He serves, among others, on the Board of Crompton Greaves Ltd. (India), as Chairman of ADAS Ltd. (UK) and has been a Trustee of the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Germany and UK for many years.
Meher Pudumjee, Chairperson
Ms. Meher Pudumjee is the Chairperson of Thermax Ltd, a company focussed in the businesses of energy and the environment.
A postgraduate in Chemical Engineering from the Imperial College of Science & Technology, London, Meher joined Thermax as a trainee engineer in August 1990. A year later, along with her husband Pheroz Pudumjee and a small team, they took over the responsibility of turning around a Thermax subsidiary company in the UK.
After her return to India in September 1996, she was appointed on the Board of Directors. She worked closely with the treasury and working capital management functions of Thermax, as also in the Environment Divisions of the company. In 2001, the family decided to take on non-executive roles on the Board. During this period she played an active role in the turnaround of the company, along with the Board and senior management of the company.
She has taken over as Chairperson, Thermax Limited, effective October 5, 2004 after the retirement of Mrs. Anu Aga.
Meher has a keen interest in music, especially western classical and is a member of a Pune based choir. She is personally involved with the NGO's Teach For India, Akanksha and Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation.
Pheroz Pudumjee, Director
Pheroz Pudumjee is a Director of the company since January 15, 2001. He managed Thermax's overseas venture in UK and facilitates the company's international initiatives including the incubation and development of new business and relevant organisational changes.
Pheroz was the Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), Pune. He was also a member of CII'S national committee on Export and a member on the Maratha Chamber of Commerce's International panel.
Pheroz has a Masters in Business Administration and a diploma in Automobile Technology from Stanford University.
M S Unnikrishnan, Managing Director & CEO
M S Unnikrishnan, took over as Managing Director on July 1, 2007. Earlier, as Executive Vice President, he was head of the company's project business, viz. captive power, boilers & heaters and air pollution control.
Unnikrishnan began his career as a graduate trainee with Thermax after completing his mechanical engineering from Regional Engineering College, Nagpur in 1982. He went on to set up marketing operations for the energy division of Thermax in the western region.
In 1987, he joined the EID Parry Group as Deputy Regional Manager and after a four-year stint, he was promoted as the head of its engineering division. In 1992, Unnikrishnan joined as an Assistant General Manager of Terrazzo Incorporated – Sharjah, heading manufacturing, marketing and commercial operations.
Unnikrishnan rejoined Thermax as a General Manager in 1997. He subsequently headed the waste management and absorption cooling divisions of the company, turning around both these businesses and making them profitable. After an organizational restructuring in 2000, he was part of the newly formed Executive Council. He led the human resource function of Thermax during its critical turnaround period and later established the Project Management Office, to spearhead the transformation initiative of the company.
Dr. Jairam Varadaraj, Director
Dr. Jairam Varadaraj is Managing Director of ELGI Equipments Ltd. and is also on the Board of Elgi Ultra Industries Ltd., Elgitread (India) Ltd. and Precot Mills Ltd. His varied experience of 16 years in India, covers textiles, polymers, mechanical machines and consumer appliances. He has spent 4 years in teaching and research in the US. He was also Chairman of the Tamil Nadu State Committee of CII.
Dr. Varadaraj is a Ph. D. from the University of Michigan and an MBA from George Washington University.
