Tulsion® pharmaceutical grade ion exchange resins are used globally in a wide range of pharmaceutical formulations.

The Tulsion® pharmaceutical resins product range covers:
  • Polacrilex (Tulsion® 335)
  • Polacrilin potassium USP (Tulsion® 339)
  • Sodium Polystyrene sulphonate USP (Tulsion® 344)
  • Calcium Polystyrene sulphonate BP (Tulsion® 345)
  • Cholastyramine resin USP (Tulsion® 412 - CHL)

These are high standard products and comply with pharmacopoeia monographs as applicable.

To suit certain specific needs of formulators, Thermax also offers customised Tulsion® pharmaceutical resins confining to the applicable pharmacopoeia monographs. Thermax's R&D team is involved in ongoing development of tailor made solutions for a variety of needs in pharmaceutical formulations.

The choice of pharmaceutical resins for a particular application depends on the functional groups available on drug molecule, functional group of the resin and the type of resin. Thermax can help in selection of a suitable resin for a particular application.

Applications covered by Tulsion® Pharmaceutical Resins

An extensive range of drug molecules is handled with Tulsion® pharmaceutical resins in variety of applications broadly categorised below:
Taste masking of bitter drug molecules
Certain drug molecules are bitter in taste and needs to be taste-masked, especially for paediatric formulations. Tulsion® pharma resins are used to form stable complex with such molecules. These complexes are non-bitter in taste or impart very little taste, and are used to make formulations with better taste.

Sustained release, extended release
Sustained release formulation needs release of drug in slow and steady manner. Tulsion® pharma resins of strong acid cation or strong base anion type are used to make complexes with sustained release properties, which are used in sustained release formulations. Release pattern of drug depends on chemistry of drug molecule and the type and characteristics of pharma resin used.

Tablet disintegration and mouth dissolving tablets
Tulsion® Polacrilin Potassium pharma resin is widely used for effective tablet disintegration and making mouth-dissolving tablets. This resin swells significantly, once it imbibes water and accelerates the mechanism of tablet disintegration. This resin is highly process-friendly.

Vitamin loading
Vitamin B12 (Cynocobalamine) can be loaded and stabilised with Tulsion® pharma resins.  This vitamin-resin complex is used in formulations.

Drug loading/stabilization
Tulsion® pharma resins can be used for loading/stabilisation of certain drug molecules. Pharma resin complex imparts stability and is more suitable to incorporate in formulation.

Potassium reduction in blood
Tulsion® Calcium Polystyrene sulphonate pharma resin is used in formulation for potassium reduction in blood. This resin is in calcium form and swaps potassium for calcium to bring down the potassium levels.

Cholesterol reduction/bile acid reduction in blood
Tulsion® Cholastyramine resin is widely used in formulations targeted for cholesterol reduction/bile acid reduction in blood. Specific properties of this resin help to bring down cholesterol/bile acid levels in blood.
